The Context and Motivation of EMEDEN Work is informed by the fact that, in Kenya, smallholder farmers produce over 75 percent of agricultural output, but their survival is impeded by key challenges ranging from access to input and output markets; infrastructure; extension services; institutional problems; climate change and food security. The Founders of EMEDEN, born and raised in rural areas, experienced first-hand these challenges, watching the daily struggles of farmers as they worked hard on their small farms but getting very little in return. To achieve economic revolution, Kenya needs to focus on creating a sustainable agricultural mechanism in the rural areas, hence a focus on the smallholder farmer. EMEDEN is therefore leveraging technology to offer farmers a one-stop-shop online platform from which they can access all the services they need to make farming work for then.
